Some sites ask for restraint. Others demand courage.
Perched within coastal scrub above the Southern Ocean, Horizon does both. Expansive views stretch across bushland to open water, uninterrupted and raw. The landscape needed to honour that. Not compete with it.
Designed by award winning architects Crosier Scott, with interiors by Carmen Grant Interiors and built by BCM Homes, this residence was crowned the 2024 HIA-CSR Australian Home of the Year. A significant recognition. But the real success sits in how the architecture and landscape speak to each other.
Because of the site’s flame zone rating, the rooftop could not become a traditional garden. Instead, a considered green roof of native grasses and resilient succulents was installed across the cantilevered form. It softens the architecture when viewed from above and strengthens thermal performance. Practical. Beautiful. Necessary.
The block falls away steeply. Rather than resisting it, we worked with it.
Tiered corten steel embankments step confidently down the slope, holding layers of coastal planting in place. The material will weather naturally, echoing the iron rich tones of the surrounding cliffs. Basalt steppers cut through gravel pathways, drawing you lower and further from the house.
There’s a subtle shift as you descend.
At the base, a firepit zone anchors the journey. It’s not oversized. It doesn’t need to be. Surrounded by textured planting and framed by borrowed ocean views, it invites people to sit. To pause. To reconnect without distraction.
Horizon isn’t just an award winning home. It’s a carefully resolved response to place, climate and terrain.
And yes, you can experience it yourself.
