A community courtyard and barbecue zone, with integrated artwork to support connection, events, and everyday use

Hendrick’s House Buninyong Design Designed for Connection

Hendrick’s House holds deep historical significance in Buninyong. Rebuilt for the community, it was always intended to be more than a building. It is a gathering place. A space for collaboration, conversation and shared experience.

Our landscape response needed to honour that purpose. Not decorate it. Strengthen it.

Welcomed & Framed by Symbolism

At the heart of the courtyard stands a Chinese inspired moon gate. Traditionally symbolising welcome and homecoming, it marks the threshold between everyday life and shared space. Passing through it feels intentional. You arrive.

In a heritage context, symbolism matters. The gate does not compete with the architecture. It complements it, reinforcing Hendrick’s House as a place of openness and return.

Designing for Community Gatherings

Community courtyards must function under pressure. Events. Meetings. Long lunches. Evening celebrations.

A commercial BBQ area anchors the space, complete with custom shelving and integrated table for preparation and service. Materials were selected for durability and ease of maintenance, ensuring the courtyard works just as well midweek as it does during larger events.

A curved decking seat wraps around a stone paved conversation zone, offering generous seating without feeling rigid or institutional. The curve softens the geometry and encourages natural interaction. Small groups can gather intimately. Larger crowds can expand outward.

Art Design & Materials

The Garden of the Little Wattlebird

The courtyard also features The Garden of the Little Wattlebird, a limited edition laser cut artwork capturing the dynamic flight of the Australian Wattlebird.

This piece celebrates movement, voice and presence. The wattlebird is known for its bold call and lively character, fitting for a site built on connection and collaboration.

Integrated into the planting and hardscape, the Wattlebird artwork becomes part of the experience. It grounds the courtyard in local ecology while reinforcing Hendrick’s House as a place where community gathers and stories unfold.

Materials That Age with Integrity

Stone paving anchors the central gathering space with permanence and texture. Timber decking introduces warmth and tactility. Together, they create a layered material palette designed to improve over time rather than date quickly.

Every element was chosen with longevity in mind. Public and community spaces demand resilience. This courtyard was designed to serve Buninyong not just now, but decades into the future.
