Winner of Terrace Week on The Block, this St Kilda penthouse terrace was designed and built in just six days, transforming a raw concrete rooftop into a fully resolved outdoor living environment. Working within the intensity of a live build, tight timelines, and a complex site, the project focused on delivering a space that balanced functionality, atmosphere, and high-end finish.
Set atop the iconic Gatwick Hotel, the design responds directly to its surroundings, framing views across the beach, city skyline, and Fitzroy Street. Through considered outdoor living space design and professional backyard planning, the terrace was divided into defined zones for dining, lounging, and entertaining, creating flow and versatility across the space.
Material selection played a key role in shaping both durability and visual impact. Bluestone paving, blackbutt decking, and custom steel elements form a cohesive base, while bespoke pieces including the Gatwick dining table, integrated seating, and feature bar elevate the space. Layered with custom lighting, sculptural elements, and curated furnishings, the terrace reflects a refined approach to modern garden aesthetics within a compact urban footprint.
The result is a rooftop landscape that feels immersive and functional, extending the apartment into a true outdoor retreat. Delivered by an experienced landscape designer, the project demonstrates how strong design thinking and execution can transform even the most constrained sites into high-performing environments.
