Awarded Gold at the 2012 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, The Conversation Garden explores how landscape design can influence human interaction. As one of the largest show gardens delivered by the team, the project was conceived around a simple idea: creating spaces that encourage people to slow down, gather, and reconnect.
The layout is driven by circular geometry, with key zones including a fire pit, dining area, and spa arranged to promote face-to-face interaction. This approach reflects a considered form of outdoor living space design, where structure and layout actively shape how the space is used, rather than simply how it looks.
Material and construction strategies were equally important. Lightweight concrete planters and a modular hardscape system were developed to allow the garden to be transported and reassembled beyond the show environment. This demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to professional backyard planning, ensuring the design could transition seamlessly into a real residential setting.
Beyond its physical form, the garden also carried a strong social purpose. A central water feature was used as a wishing well during the show, supporting The Australian Suicide Prevention Foundation and reinforcing the garden’s underlying intent, connection, conversation, and shared experience.
The result is a landscape that balances design, function, and meaning, delivered by an experienced landscape designer to create a space that resonates both visually and socially.
