The Albert Park Rooftop was featured in OUTdoor Design & Living (Edition 32), recognised as part of the magazine’s exploration into rooftop gardens and elevated outdoor living.

Positioned within their “Up on High” feature, the project was highlighted as an example of how urban rooftops can become fully realised garden retreats, not secondary spaces, but considered extensions of architecture.

Set above a double garage in inner-city Melbourne, the 30sqm terrace presented structural limits, exposure challenges and a narrow footprint. Rather than disguising those constraints, the design used them as structure.

  • Sweeping corten steel forms anchor the space.
  • Curved seating integrates directly with planting.
  • Level changes create depth within a compact site.

The publication emphasised the terrace’s layered planting, sculptural geometry and spatial flow — demonstrating how thoughtful design can transform elevated platforms into functional, climate-responsive living environments.

The feature reinforced a broader shift in Australian outdoor design: rooftops are no longer overlooked surfaces. They are opportunities.

For Paal Grant Designs, the recognition affirmed our commitment to intelligent landscape architecture — where structure, material performance and behavioural choreography are resolved before aesthetics.

The Albert Park Rooftop remains a defining example of how constraint can elevate design thinking.
